“ I don’t believe art should be about the artist. Art should speak for itself — it should move the collector who takes it home. I learned to paint in a time when ‘less is more,’ when the work was the star of the show. That belief has never changed. ”
About Rebecca Hodges
Rebecca Hodges (Smith) is a nationally recognized, self-taught artist whose paintings are held in both corporate and private collections across the United States. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions from Vail, Colorado to New York City.Until 2022, Rebecca was represented by Peter Marcelle — the esteemed Manhattan and Long Island art dealer known for his decades-long representation of Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, among other American masters. Their collaboration continued until his passing in 2022, after which Rebecca briefly withdrew her work from the public eye — until now.Originally from Colorado Springs, CO, her artistic journey began with an unexpected commission: a stage backdrop for rock musician Meat Loaf. Since then, she has developed a distinctive body of work rooted in emotion, place, and memory — painting what she knows and feels most deeply.
“ Painting isn’t something I like to do — it’s something I have to do. When I’m creating, I lose all sense of time and distance between the real world and the ethereal one I’m building on canvas. ”
Rebecca and her husband, Dr. Scott Smith, share seven children and divide their time between Pennsylvania and Colorado, where each studio setting brings a new atmosphere and influence to her art.
